Juneteenth
June 19
19 June, referred to as ‘Juneteenth’, is a federal American holiday which commemorates the effective end of slavery when the Union Army marched to Galveston Bay, Texas in 1865 and freed the 250,000 enslaved black people, despite the Emancipation Proclamation being declared 1863. Often referred to as the United States’ second independence day, today Juneteenth is celebrated throughout the nation with parades, festivals, street parties and cookouts.
