Guy Fawkes Night
5 November

Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, is celebrated each year on 5 November. The day commemorates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, which attempted to blow up the King and the House of Lords using 36 barrels of gunpowder. Guy Fawkes was a key figure in this plot and was responsible for the gunpowder stored beneath Parliament. He was apprehended before the plot could be executed.
The celebrations typically include bonfires, fireworks, sparklers and the eating of toffee-covered apples. An 18th century rhyme which is often recited on the occasion is:
Remember, remember, the fifth of November
Gunpowder treason and plot
We see no reason
Why Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot
